Later in 1651 Roger Williams sold the island along with his trading post to William Smith, since then, property has remained relatively undisturbed. Rabbit Island consists of a central plateau, elevated six to ten feet above sea level. This plateau is surrounded by a gently sloping tidal flat that supports salt marshes in sheltered sections and beaches where it faces wind and waves. The central plateau hosts a cathedral like forest, featuring majestic Red Oaks. Scattered among them are Gray Birch, Sassafras, and Wild Black Cherry.
